You might have heard of the term "Yoga" many a times in your routine life. But, are you actually aware of it in true sense? Want to know what is it all about? In this article, we will take you through what Yoga is, its history, types, benefits and many more.

Meaning of  Yoga

Yoga is lot more than just an exercise form. It is a Sanskrit term which means "union" i.e to join and unite together. The major motive of yoga is to unite rather bring together body, mind and spirit into a harmonious whole. Union basically means something that brings you to the ultimate reality, where individual manifestations of life are surface bubbles in the process of creation.

Origin & History

The practice of Yoga can be traced back 5000 years to Indus-Saraswati civilizations in India. Patanjali, a hindu teacher was the one to record the first and basic principles of Yoga called Yoga Sutras. Varieties of Yoga forms have been developed since then. The current favorite Yoga form i.e Hatha yoga was introduced to the west in the 1920s by T. Krishnamacharya. As we know that, Yoga is originated from the ancient East. however it has evolved and has been really popular in this modern era among the western nations. We can say that, Yoga has become part of daily lives of people who seek healthy life and want to stay fit and to achieve peace of mind. Yoga can be  practiced  close to nature, out of doors or on bumpy ground in large tents with slightly slippy carpets on summer retreats or at gym. However, it is also common now to see the wonderfully tranquil and well-equipped yoga studios in the towns and cities too.

Adiyogi- The First Yogi

Lord Shiva is known as the Adiyogi or the first yogi- the originator of Yoga. He was the one who first put this seed into the human mind. They say that, over fifteen years ago, Shiva attained to his full enlightenment and abandoned himself in an intense ecstatic dance upon the Himalayas.
